Originária do candomblé, a celebração em homenagem a Iemanjá na cidade de Salvador, que ocorre no dia 2 de fevereiro, é um evento singular no Brasil e no estado da Bahia. As ruas do Rio Vermelho são tomadas por fiéis, em sua maioria vestidos de branco, que seguem em direção aos barcos para depositar seus presentes para a rainha do mar em balaios. A emoção e a alegria são predominantes durante o dia da festa, quando a cidade inteira se detém para saudar a rainha do mar.
Há 19 anos, o Ministereo Público Soundsystem homenageia Iemanjá com uma festa esplêndida nas ruas ao som do melhor da música jamaicana. Para celebrar a ocasião, eles convidaram o BaianaSystem, parceiros de longa data em muitos carnavais, para festejarem juntos.
Como assíduo frequentador da festa, tive a honra de ser convidado para criar a arte do evento que tanto admiro. Durante o processo, pude constatar que a cultura do soundsystem na Bahia compartilha similaridades com a cultura jamaicana que transcendem as questões raciais.
A colaboração entre o Ministereo Público Soundsystem e o BaianaSystem destaca a relevância das parcerias artísticas para a inovação e a preservação da cultura. Influenciada pela cultura jamaicana, a cena do soundsystem na Bahia é um exemplo vibrante de como a música pode ser um canal para a expressão cultural e a união das pessoas.

Rooted in the spiritual traditions of Candomblé, the veneration of Iemanjá unfolds in Salvador’s vibrant heart on the second of February, casting a unique spell across Brazil and the Bahia state. The Rio Vermelho neighborhood awakens to a sea of devotees, a cascade of white garments flowing towards the vessels that cradle their woven offerings to the sovereign of the seas. It is a day when the pulse of the city synchronizes with the rhythm of the waves, all to honor the marine matriarch.
For nearly two decades, the pulsating beats of Ministereo Público Soundsystem have paid tribute to Iemanjá, igniting the streets with a resplendent celebration that echoes the finest Jamaican melodies. In a fusion of festivity and fellowship, they have joined forces with BaianaSystem, their comrades through countless carnivals, to revel in unison.
As a loyal celebrant, I was graced with the privilege to craft the visual anthem for this cherished jubilee. The creative odyssey unveiled to me the profound kinship between Bahia’s soundsystem ethos and the Jamaican spirit, a bond that surmounts the mere contours of race.
The alliance of Ministereo Público Soundsystem and BaianaSystem stands as a testament to the transformative power of artistic collaboration, fueling both innovation and the safeguarding of our cultural tapestry. Steeped in Jamaican influence, Bahia’s soundsystem culture radiates as a dynamic exemplar of music’s role as a conduit for cultural expression and communal harmony.
